Doris Bunte Trial begins.

April 29, 1971

The Boston City Council begins hearings on whether to dismiss Bunte as a member of the board of the Boston Housing Authority board in the council Chambers. During 13 days of testimony, Mayor Kevin White charges that Bunte committed minor financial improprieties and made improper use of her board position. Despite scant evidence and protests from residents and the media, the council votes to dismiss Bunte by a 5 to 4 margin on July 12, 1971. The Massachusetts Superior Court overrules the decision on December 3, 1971, and the Supreme Judicial Court orders Bunte’s reinstatement on February 7, 1972.
